History
In September 1960, 26 local business leaders met at JR’s Drive-In in Ocean City to establish an organization dedicated to supporting the area’s growing hospitality industry. The group identified nine key priorities and immediately began addressing important issues affecting local businesses, including health permits and workforce regulations. As part of these efforts, Kathleen Harman reached out to hospitality organizations in destinations such as Miami and Atlantic City to gather insights and best practices.
At the organization’s final recorded meeting on October 11, 1960, the board formally adopted its platform and appointed a special committee to examine liquor licensing issues. Despite its promising start, the group soon disbanded due to what was described as “too many diverse interests.”
More than a decade later, in 1971, the organization was revived to once again serve Ocean City’s hospitality community. Kathleen Harman, whose early leadership helped shape the association’s foundation, became its first President, marking the beginning of a new era of advocacy and collaboration for the local tourism industry.
